The differences are that a mesa is smaller than a plateau, and a butte is smaller than a mesa. Monument Valley's buttes are probably the most famous buttes of all time.

Skull Mesa and Elephant Butte are located several miles north of the Highlands at Canyon Ridge (as the bird flies) and are visible from some of the lots. Hiking Skull Mesa, which is located in the Tonto National Forest, is a challenge that includes crisscrossing Cave Creek Wash, and jumping boulders when the wash is running.

Elephant Butte, which got its name because its profile resembles the back, head and trunk of an elephant, is a local landmark and a favorite destination for advanced hikers, who must be accompanied by Spur Cross Preservation Area park rangers. Climbers are rewarded by reaching a fortress, presumed to be built by the Hohokam people approximately 800 years ago.
