During dry spells the saguaro's body contracts as it survives on its stored water.
Birds, rodents, ants and other insects feed on the saguaro's fruit, pulp, seeds and its flowers' nectar. Woodpeckers drill holes in the body to create nests, and owls and other birds move into these nests after the woodpeckers leave.
Mature saguaros can grow higher than 50 feet, but it takes more than 150 years to reach that height. And they start out amazingly small. Only half inch tall by the end of their first year, infant saguaros rely on the protection of bushy plants in order to survive the hot sun and trampling feet.
